It&#8217;s actually my favorite region in the entire world. New attractions are popping up left and right and locals are becoming more welcoming towards tourists. When people travel to the Middle East, they generally flock to the UAE, Jordan, Morocco or Turkey. However, there&#8217;s another hidden gem in this part of the world &#8211; Kuwait. I&#8217;ll admit that I didn&#8217;t exactly volunteer to go to Kuwait right away. We were in Dubai and needed to reset our visas. We happened to find reasonable flights to Kuwait and that&#8217;s how we ended up there. We honestly didn&#8217;t have very many expectations before our visit, but we were proven wrong. Kuwait blew us away in every which way. We left this incredible country wanting more. If you&#8217;re curious about exploring lesser-known areas of the Middle East, Kuwait City is perfect for you. Several skyscrapers line the city, yet you get a really good taste of the traditional Arab culture. Kuwait City will give you an authentic experience of the Arabic world. If you really want to experience everything that Kuwait City has to offer, I recommend a minimum stay of three nights.<\/li>\n<li>You need a visa to visit Kuwait unless you are a citizen of a GCC country. GCC countries are Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Citizens from the United States, Australia, Japan, Canada, and all EU countries can apply for their visas online. The application process was fast and easy and I only had to answer a few basic travel questions. My visa was approved within three business days and it didn&#8217;t cost me anything. Don&#8217;t forget to print out your visa once it&#8217;s approved. For more information on the visa requirements, you check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/evisa.moi.gov.kw\/evisa\/home_e.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>When you arrive at the airport (Kuwait International Airport) and you have an e-Visa, don&#8217;t follow the crowd to the immigration counters. You&#8217;ll actually need to head to Gate 2 and speak with an immigration offer there. He\/she will ask for a printed copy of your visa and give you an official printout that will serve as your visa. Don&#8217;t lose this printout because you&#8217;ll need to present it when exiting the country. Honestly, this was the nicest immigration encounter I&#8217;ve had in all my travels. The officer was extremely chatty and gave us so many recommendations about what to eat and what to do. We chatted with him for over ten minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Uber does not exist in Kuwait City, but they have a similar app called Careem. I don&#8217;t recommend it because we had to wait an average of 15+ minutes each time we needed a ride. It&#8217;s better to flag down a taxi. You can negotiate the fixed price the driver gives you or you can have them use their meter. We used a taxi a few times and we didn&#8217;t have any issues being ripped off by the drivers. They were all very honest. We also used the public bus in Kuwait City and had a great experience. The buses are clean and air-conditioned and the drivers are very friendly. A taxi from the airport to the hotel was going to cost us $35. Instead, we hopped on the public bus and paid $3.50 for two people.<\/li>\n<li>The currency in Kuwait is the Kuwaiti dinar. It&#8217;s currently the world&#8217;s highest-valued currency. There are ATMs everywhere and most places accept credit cards.<\/li>\n<li>Kuwait City is safe. We walked everywhere, even at night, and we didn&#8217;t have any issues. There&#8217;s a big community of Western expats from all over the world who live there comfortably.<\/li>\n<li>Arabic is the official language in Kuwait. We did experience some language barriers so it&#8217;s wise to have Google Translate handy at all times just to be safe, especially when hailing a taxi.<\/li>\n<li>Kuwait is a dry country and alcohol is illegal here.<\/li>\n<li>Dress conservatively. Women should avoid shorts and tight clothing. Men should avoid shorts that are above the knees.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid public display of affection. Keep that for your hotel room.<\/li>\n<li>Renting a car is relatively inexpensive, but I don&#8217;t recommend it. Driving is rather reckless here.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re wanting a thorough tour of the city, most taxi drivers offer an hourly rate. It&#8217;s usually cheaper to hire them for a few hours than it is to drive from one location to another.<\/li>\n<li>Summer in Kuwait is miserably hot. Unfortunately, that&#8217;s when we went and the heat was unbearable. The best time to visit is during their winter months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_Do\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbaa2;\">Things to Do:<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Kuwait_Towers\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbaa2;\">1. Kuwait Towers<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is a group of three towers that symbolizes Kuwait&#8217;s economic and cultural rebirth. The towers are stunning, especially at night. We had a beautiful view of them from our hotel room and we were in awe. You can go up in the tower and get a breathtaking view of the city. You all know I&#8217;m way too cheap to pay for that. Ha!&nbsp; The top floor rotates so you get to see the entire city, and there&#8217;s also a restaurant for you to dine in.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1342\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1342\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1342\" src=\"https:\/\/dishadiscovers.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Kuwait-Towers-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"a photo of the kuwait towers\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The infamous Kuwait Towers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Grand_Mosque\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbaa2;\">2. Grand Mosque<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Grand Mosque is the largest and official mosque in Kuwait and the eighth largest mosque in the world. The mosque offers free guided tours, but tours are not available during Ramadan. Make sure that you are dressed properly &#8211; cover your legs and shoulders. Ladies, they&#8217;ll provide you with a headscarf if you don&#8217;t have one.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Souk_Al-Mubarakiya\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbaa2;\">3. Souk Al-Mubarakiya<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is one of Kuwait&#8217;s oldest traditional markets and the deals are unbeatable. We went to this area every night for dinner and had the best time. The restaurants inside the souk are very traditional. I don&#8217;t think very many tourists were brave enough to dine here which meant that we were the only tourists at the restaurants. In turn, we received exceptional service and care from the staff. We had the time of our lives trying local dishes and drinking Arabic tea. In fact, these are some of my fondest travel memories. Aside from restaurants, we spent several hours just wandering around the souk and checking out the shops. You&#8217;ll find shops that sell traditional outfits, jewelry, and other Arab antiques. If you&#8217;re a foodie like me, you&#8217;ll love the shops here that sell spices, sweets, fruit, and more. This was my absolute favorite area of Kuwait City.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1352\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1352\" src=\"https:\/\/dishadiscovers.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/souk-mubarakiya-1024x887.jpg\" alt=\"a delicious meal we had in kuwait city\" width=\"960\" height=\"832\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The yummiest meal ever!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Sadu_House\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbaa2;\">4. Sadu House<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sadu House is a traditional Kuwaiti style house that showcases the art of Bedouin weaving and its history. Entry is free and they have several exhibition rooms where you can learn more about the history of weaving. They also have outfits, bags, and rugs on display, which I found really interesting. The patterns on these items are so intricate and beautiful. It&#8217;s super close to the National Museum so you can combine your visits.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1348\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1348\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1348\" src=\"https:\/\/dishadiscovers.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/sadu-house-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"a photo of some woven patterns at sadu house\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aren&#8217;t these designs beautiful?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Kuwait_National_Museum\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbaa2;\">5. Kuwait National Museum<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This museum is a great place to learn about the history and traditions of Kuwait. The museum is comprised of several buildings and four sections &#8211; Kuwait Heritage Museum, Archaeological Museum, Boom al Mouhallab, and the Planetarium. Unfortunately, some of the sections were closed when we went as they were undergoing renovations. The Heritage Museum was very eye-opening as it gave a thorough view of Kuwait&#8217;s history from the very beginning. One part of the museum has life-sized wax models that are performing difference crafts and tasks. This part of the museum depicts a street so it actually feels like you&#8217;re not in a museum. Another part of the museum shows actual objects that were collected from the past and put on display. Some of these objects include musical instruments. The final part of the Heritage Museum displays photos of what Kuwait used to look like in the past. The vibe of the Heritage Museum was rather creepy as the lighting was very dark in there. Despite that, we learned a lot about Kuwaiti history and walked out knowing more about the culture.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1350\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1350\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1350\" src=\"https:\/\/dishadiscovers.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/national-museum-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"a display of a wax statue at the museum\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I loved walking through this part of the museum and seeing these life-sized wax statues demonstrating certain trades and crafts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Liberation_Tower\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbaa2;\">6. Liberation Tower<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This tower is a symbol of Kuwait&#8217;s liberation and it&#8217;s the second-largest tower in the country. It&#8217;s named Liberation Tower because of Kuwait&#8217;s freedom from Iraqi occupation during the Gulf War. The tower has a revolving restaurant and an observation deck. Avenues Mall<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I know it&#8217;s crazy to put a mall on my list of things to do. But, hear me out. This mall is the largest shopping mall in Kuwait and the second largest mall in the Middle East. I wanted to pack my bags up and move into this mall. I&#8217;m not much into shopping, but I still enjoyed walking around. It has 800+ stores, cafes, cinemas, fountains, and restaurants. This will make my American peeps happy &#8211; it has Texas Roadhouse, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Raising Cane&#8217;s, Cheesecake Factory and more. Duh, I ate at Olive Garden. The mall is divided into seven districts and each district has a different feel to it. For example, one district is hipper and caters to younger people, whereas another district is more traditional. It&#8217;s essentially an outdoor museum that portrays the devastation of the Gulf War. This island was home to 2000+ people, but they were forced to the mainland when Iraq invaded it during the war. To this day, all of the homes and buildings remain uninhabited. Sadly, we weren&#8217;t able to go because the heat was too much to handle.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Beaches\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffbaa2;\">9. Beaches<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At the end of a long day&#8217;s worth of sightseeing, go relax by the beach. Kuwait&#8217;s coastline is gorgeous and has crystal clear blue water. The beaches are hit or miss and expect there to be some litter.
